With all the carnage and animalistic slaughter by Daesh, not to mention millions of people fleeing them (v. maybe hundreds fleeing Assad prior to their ascent) and being declared our existential-enemy-du-jour, the US government has trouble approving* of their defeat.
It's like they REVEL in the fact that they can pull their little levers and watch the lives millions of human beings be destroyed for no apparent reason — and they don't want that massive "Masters of the Universe" endorphin high to end.
Not only psychopaths, but junkie psychopaths as well.
I hope their withdrawal is filled with writhing agony and their families are taken out their Ivy League schools andvforced to help rebuild at least some of the lives mummy and daddy helped to so thoroughly destroy.
*I really struggled with a word for what they had trouble with. One could write books about the pathology of what that spox was struggling (or not struggling) with. I couldn't grasp the reluctance at all, and I'm usually pretty good at seeing the the thought processes and motivations (good, bad, or mixed) as the words are coming out. My conclusion was that there were no thought processes going on that normal (ie. at least marginally moral) people would recognize. There must be SO many competing yet unreconcilable concepts floating around in the Beltway "doer" mindscape that they've completely cancelled all the others out. Just scary-blank at this point. Able/likely to do anything.
Hell of a way to rule a world. And the MENA suffers indescribably as a result.
Palmyra is the doorway to Deir el Zor, an exposed area controlled by Daesh and from there an easy walk to enter Daesh's Syrian HQ in Syria, Raqqa, and chase the whole lot of them back into Iraq.
Americans and friends perhaps hoping that during the ceae-fire the Syrian opposition would have equaled in strength the Syrian Army before Daesh itself gets neutralized altogether in Syria. No other possible explanation as to why the US is not celebrating the defeat of Daesh at Palmyra. They like the idea of Daesh falling but not the timing.
